Using a magnifying glass on gender-based violence

In this episode, we look at gender-based violence affecting Latin America, especially women. Despite having only 8 per cent of the world's population, the region is responsible for 37 per cent of the world's homicides. In this context, women face disproportionate risks, representing an average of 12 femicides per day in 2021 in 29 countries of the region. Please join us as we discuss the urgent need to provide solutions and efforts to resolve this widespread crisis.

Justice redefined: Strategies centered on victims

We highlight the challenges and commitments of public institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean to provide focused care for victims of sexual assault and gender-based violence. This episode examines diverse perspectives from institutional entities in Costa Rica, Argentina, the Dominican Republic, and Colombia, from forensic medicine to the police to the courts. This approach seeks to highlight institutional considerations that deepen practices which place victims at the center  and avoid revictimization. Following the language of LasTesis, the approach builds an environment where there is no oppressive state.

Transformative ties: A chain of care for Latin America

According to the Latin American Map of Femicides (MLF), the rates of femicides have risen in 15 countries of the region in 2023, relative to the total seen in 2022. Other international organizations confirm the trend. The rise suggests greater engagement and coordination of justice and security authorities in Latin America, from police to courts to forensic medicine. Taking institutional testimonies from Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, this episode covers interagency coordination efforts to provide greater and better justice to victims of sexual violence.
